Take That Naysayers!

Yes, yes I know, I need to tell you about the rest of my East Coast/Colorado tour but for right now indulge me for some late night musings.

Ever since I started writing I’ve been hearing the same warning repeated over and over again. Chick lit is on the way out. It’s nothing but a fad, its star is sinking, yada yada yada.

Whatever, tell it to Kate White and Jennifer Weiner. Of course White and (as of her last book) Weiner don’t just write chick lit books they, like me, have combined two genres in order to create a chick lit hybrid and as I’ve said before, that may very well be the key to chick lit’s survival.

But chick lit murder mysteries are no longer a major novelty (which is not to say you shouldn’t buy the Sophie books because, of course, they’re special). Nonetheless the newest thing is Chick Lit fantasy. Sarah Mlynowski helped define this genre with Bras and Broomsticks and MaryJanice Davidson is making a killing (no pun intended, really) with her books that bear titles like Undead and Unreturnable and Undead and Unwed.

The newest gal on that particular block is Shanna Swendson author of Once Upon Stilettos and Enchanted Inc. I’ve heard through the publishing grapevine that her sales are taking off big time. She is being credited for creating books that expertly combine the best aspects of both Harry Potter and Bridget Jones. When I heard this I immediately knew Swendson was a kindred spirit. After all, author Jorie Green Mark was quoted as saying that “If Bridgett Jones and Sherlock Holmes ever had an American love child she might be a little bit like the clever Sophie Katz.” So to my way of thinking that means that if my protagonist met Swendson’s protagonist they would surely be solving murders and goggling sexy single wizards over some well deserved Cosmos. Plus judging from Swendson’s blog I would say that she’s an author that I would like to hang out with given the chance.

But mostly I’m just thrilled that yet another writer is out there pushing the chick lit envelope. It seems that chick lit is a little like rock & roll. It doesn’t die…it evolves.

I so agree - I stumbled upon Enchanted Inc at the library a few months ago and absolutely loved it! Definately a fun read.

I'll admit that I haven't read Enchanted Inc yet but it's been recommended to me so frequently that it's now just a matter of time...

ABOUT KYRA DAVIS

I'm the internationally published author of the Sophie Katz mystery series, and So Much For My Happy Ending. My first Erotic Fiction Trilogy will be released in January 2013.

Aside from that, I'm a single mom; I'm addicted to coffee and True Blood (the show, not the drink). I'm happy with who I am yet I’m always striving to be better; I have more bad hair days than good ones, I love a challenge but I am not fearless, I’m….well…just me.
