San Diego In A Nutshell

Okay, before I tell you about my latest adventures here’s a quick FYI: Passion, Betrayal And Killer Highlights is featured in the current For Me magazine and Ebony magazine. I’m obviously very excited about this and I highly encourage you to check out the reviews next time you’re at a newsstand/bookstore.

Okay, moving on. My trip to San Diego didn’t exactly have an auspicious beginning. As I mentioned before I was fighting off a cold when I left Denver. Well it hit me on Thursday (the day I left for San Diego) BIG TIME. We’re talking fever, chills, nausea, sinus headaches the works. Here I had a television appearance first thing on Friday morning at KUSI and on Thursday night I was in a hotel room trying to get my son ready for bed while I threw up. It was fun times for everybody. Then later that night (or early the next morning if you want to be technical about it) it became clear to me that my son had caught my illness. He coughed through the night while I did my best to keep my head out of the toilet. But miraculously I managed to pull it together for the interview. I took some heavy duty medication, put on some heavy duty make-up and headed down to the studio and as unbelievable as this is the interview actually went well! The anchors who interviewed me, Sandra Maas and Andrea Naverson were incredibly nice as were the producers of the show who went out of their way to talk to me and make me feel at home. In other words, I didn’t throw-up on air. Yea me.

My son was equally determined to grin and bear it. Yes, he was sick as a dog but he had come to San Diego to go to the zoo and Sea World and nothing short of emergency open heart surgery was going to keep him from doing just that. So I did my motherly duty and took him to both. We didn’t stay at the zoo as long as we would have if we had been in good health but he still got to see the Red Panda, the binturong, the wombat and the naked mole rat which was what was most important to him. The next day we went to Sea World which was fun but again, his health mandated that we keep the visit short.

As Murphy’s Law would have it, both my son and I were almost fully recovered on Sunday which was supposed to be our last day in San Diego. I went to The Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore signing and while the audience in attendance was smaller than that of many of my other events, there were a few things that made it more than a little noteworthy. First of all, there were the owners who were so friendly and kind it was impossible not to feel welcome. In addition to that blog reader Pricilla was in attendance! I was so excited to finally be able to meet her! She’s every bit as kind and genuine as her posted comments suggest and believe it or not she’s even more gorgeous than her killer picture (sorry guys, she’s married). Anyhoo, I had a great time chatting with her and she made the event truly special.

Okay, so now that all my official Southern Cal tour stops were complete I was supposed to drive back up to Northern California with my son. But here’s the thing…when you go to Sea World you can buy a one-day pass for $54 or you can buy a two-day pass for $53. So obviously I bought the two-day pass even though I doubted I was going to use it. But now my son was feeling better so I figured, what the hell? I extended my stay for one more day in San Diego and the next morning I took him back to Sea World and even got him a “behind the scenes tour.” He LOVED it. On the tour he got to get up close and personal with some rescued elephant seal pups, sea turtles, a mother dolphin and her baby and he even got to pet a shark! The child was in second heaven. Then we got to see all the attractions at the park that he missed the first time around. It was just wonderful.

Afterwards I drove us up to Carlsbad and checked us into a child friendly, affordable Inn with a pool. By the way, do you know what’s in Carlsbad? Legoland. I know, I know, but I’ve always wanted to do this! Just drive up the coast and stop at all the silly touristy attractions that interested me in any way. When I originally dreamed that idea up I didn’t have a child so Legoland wasn’t on my imaginary agenda but I’m cool with Legos so why not? I haven’t told my son what I’m planning yet (better to surprise him then have it not work out and disappoint him) but I do think it’s going to happen. I also booked a hotel for tomorrow in Oxnard for no reason other than that it is more than two hours and less than three hours North of where I am now. I figured that on our way back up to N. Cal on Wednesday we could stop at Solvang, otherwise known as Danish Town. There are lots of cute shops and right outside town there’s an Ostrich farm where for three dollars you can feed the cute (albeit doomed) fowl.

California is such a fun state. If you ever have the chance you should just drive up its coast and see what you find. I guarantee you it’ll be interesting!

Hey! I wish I'd checked your schedule! My sister lives in San Diego! I could have sent her and my niece out to meet you. OK, I'm on page 322 of your book and I don't want it to end!

Oh yea!!! I'm so glad you liked it! As for the small San Diego attendance; it's my fault for not blogging more consistently (thus inadvertently discouraging people from coming here on a daily basis). But to be honest it's kind of amazing that I'm able to fit blogging in at all. I just got a myspace account and I haven't even had the time to figure out how it works. People keep leaving me messages and inviting me to be one of their "friends" and I don't have any idea how to respond! Remember the days when knowing a lot about a computer made you a geek? Now my lack of technology know-how makes me the biggest dork around.

My Space is so complicated! I had to call my 16 year old niece and Rey (my husband) had to message his 14 year old niece to figure out what the heck we were doing. (Isn't that hilarious!? Kids know too much about technology for their own good.)

Sometimes I think of moving my blog there because it gets so much more traffic but then I'm not sure because it's also very complicated. hmm....

ABOUT KYRA DAVIS

I'm the internationally published author of the Sophie Katz mystery series, and So Much For My Happy Ending. My first Erotic Fiction Trilogy will be released in January 2013.

Aside from that, I'm a single mom; I'm addicted to coffee and True Blood (the show, not the drink). I'm happy with who I am yet I’m always striving to be better; I have more bad hair days than good ones, I love a challenge but I am not fearless, I’m….well…just me.
