Birthdays, Denver and Old College Buddies

Well the birthday was a success. I even managed to put a cake together at the last minute! Yea me! Of course after pleading with me to make him a “homemade cake” my son barely touched it but everybody else seemed to enjoy it so I guess there’s some satisfaction in that. I actually ended up throwing my son a surprise B-Day party at the last minute. You see I thought I was going to have to be in San Diego today for the beginning of my Southern California book tour but it turns out I don’t have to be there until tomorrow (for those of you in that area tune into KUSI’s late morning show around eleven to catch my interview and please come say hi during my Sunday book signing at Mysterious Galaxy at 2:00). So I called a few of my son’s friends and asked them to stop by for cake and the like and I had my mother take my boy to the park at a strategic time. When he came back he was greeted with balloons, confetti and small children jumping out from behind couches. It was really very cute and he was greatly appreciative.

Now a quick word on what happened in Denver. It didn’t start out so great. I got off the plane at my scheduled time but my luggage (along with the luggage of one other passenger) did not. America West swore that I would definitely have it by that night. Larry King once said he suspected that anyone who interviewed for a job with an airline had to take a lie detector test first and if they failed they’d be hired. I’m beginning to see his point. Anyway things immediately improved when an old college girlfriend who had moved to Denver came to pick me up. I haven’t seen Beth since we graduated and it was wonderful to be able to catch up with her and meet her husband and children. It’s funny because we come from such different backgrounds (I was raised within a Californian, liberal, Jewish, matriarchal family and she was raised in a Southern, conservative, military, patriarchal family) but we relate to one another so well. After talking to her for two minutes it felt as if no time had passed at all. Anyway she brought me back to her home and prepared a wonderful home cooked meal in my honor and then I finally got back to my hotel where my luggage had NOT been delivered. Furthermore every time I tried to call the baggage department at America West I got a busy signal. Finally I called the corporate headquarters and had THEM put me through at which point I was told that my luggage would most likely (no longer definitely) be at my hotel before my 10:30 am television appearance.

No such luck. Hopefully the people who saw me on TV thought my “messy up-do” was contrived rather than the result of being forced to put myself together without the help of a proper hairbrush.

Anyway the interview on KUSA-TV’s (Denver’s NBC affiliate) morning show, Colorado & Co. went very well. The hosts, Denise Plate and Mark McIntosh, were a lot of fun and knew how to interview (you’d be amazed at how many “professionals” don’t have that skill). So it put me in a good mood. I then spent the day toddling around Denver before going to my first book signing at Denver’s Murder By The Book. There was a great turnout and they actually had a cake made that looks exactly like my book! How cool is that??? I'll post the picture soon.

Then it was off to Boulder for my signing at High Crimes. Again there was a great turn out and Beth came to this one so we went out for drinks/dinner afterwards. Boulder is a great little city. I strongly encourage all of you to go there if ever given a chance. It’s impossible not to be charmed by it.

Then it was back to my hotel where I was greeted by MY LUGGAGE! Just in time for me to put it on the plane that was flying me back to California. I also came to the realization that my throat was soar and I was a bit congested. Yes, I was bringing back a cold as a souvenir. Ah well, these are the challenges of life.

ABOUT KYRA DAVIS

I'm the internationally published author of the Sophie Katz mystery series, and So Much For My Happy Ending. My first Erotic Fiction Trilogy will be released in January 2013.

Aside from that, I'm a single mom; I'm addicted to coffee and True Blood (the show, not the drink). I'm happy with who I am yet I’m always striving to be better; I have more bad hair days than good ones, I love a challenge but I am not fearless, I’m….well…just me.
