Another Reason To Be Grateful

There's a new concert series in Brooklyn called "The Impossible Music Session." American bands play the music of bands from other countries who are forbidden by their governments to perform themselves.  Those banned groups join the concert via webcam so they can finally see their music performed in front of a live audience.  Groups like The Plastic Wave who live in Tehran and are not allowed to perform "Western-style rock" or feature a women as their lead singer take part in the event.  You can learn a little about them by clicking the above links or watching the video here:

If you haven't checked out their website do it now because the Iranian government can take it down at any moment.    Another group that had an American band perform for them was Baloberos Crew, a hip-hop group from Guinea-Bissau.  They rap about the corrupt military leadership of their country.  I really wish I could have attended a concert while I was in Brooklyn recently and who knows, maybe I'll have a chance to see it in the future.  But the reason I'm blogging about it now is that we should all remember the struggles of these groups and artists like them, particularly as we go into 4th of July weekend.  Our country is far from perfect and there are times when the powers that be try to keep us quiet but unless we're leaking top secret military strategy they can't actually arrest us for not keeping quiet.  We can voice our opposition to our leaders via megaphones, in books and in our music. We can express ourselves in our art and in our dance because it's our right.

As an author I'm thankful for that.  As a human being I'm effusively grateful.  None of us should ever forget how lucky we are.

ABOUT KYRA DAVIS

I'm the internationally published author of the Sophie Katz mystery series, and So Much For My Happy Ending. My first Erotic Fiction Trilogy will be released in January 2013.

Aside from that, I'm a single mom; I'm addicted to coffee and True Blood (the show, not the drink). I'm happy with who I am yet I’m always striving to be better; I have more bad hair days than good ones, I love a challenge but I am not fearless, I’m….well…just me.
