No one involved with THIS I...Excellent point, Kyra! No one involved with THIS IS CHICK-LIT is anti literary fiction. I was an independent bookseller for 11 years, a PW reviewer, a freelance editor and on and on. One of my forthcoming books is classified by its publisher as literary fiction. It is Elizabeth Merrick who has created the divide. All we are saying, on our side of the fence, is that well-rounded readers should read widely and we are offering, in THIS IS CHICK-LIT, the opportunity for readers to sample the wide variety of styles and themes explored under the umbrella of Chick-Lit. No one should suppport someone else's writing just because she's a woman, but it is ignorant to trash an entire genre wholesale.Lauren Baratz-Logstedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09697004599212202264noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10992888.post-1155805034405034712006-08-17T01:57:00.000-07:002006-08-17T01:57:00.000-07:00Wow, more haters; I guess I really have hit the bi...Wow, more haters; I guess I really have hit the big time.

Thanks for having my back mmole!

bn--I don't think you understood my post. I'm a huge fan of literary fiction. If it's good I don't really care what the sex of the author is. What I have a problem with is people who make harsh judgments against a genre before they take the time to READ IT! No one would say that all thrillers are about serial killers. Some of them are about crimes of passion, others about Corporate America. But when a genre comes out that is identified as being feminine everybody immediately assumes that all the books are about finding men and shoe shopping even though those subjects are only represented in a fraction of the chick lit books out there. What hurts is that so-called feminists are MORE likely to marginalize the work within a female driven genre then those within a male driven one.

And chick-lit authors aren't trying to push other authors out of the mix. Check out the NY Times hardcover bestseller list. Of the 15 books on there two of them can be considered chick-lit and only in the loosest sense of the term. If you write something that people will want to read it will sell no matter what the genre.

When you’re calmer read my blog-post again (in it’s entirety) and try to do so with a more open mind. You don't need to agree with me but I think you should at least understand the arguments.kyradavishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11564245025938264405noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10992888.post-1155758239966288522006-08-16T12:57:00.000-07:002006-08-16T12:57:00.000-07:00There nothing feminist about supporting someone's ...There nothing feminist about supporting someone's writing JUST BECAUSE they are a woman. Tell me, are you a champion of Anne Coulter too?

What hurts women is that you and your friends glut the market with inferior books and push ambitious literary authors out of the cultural playing field.

You go on and hide behind what you call feminism so you don't have to own up to the fact that you're not a very good writer.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10992888.post-1155662243820826322006-08-15T10:17:00.000-07:002006-08-15T10:17:00.000-07:00Hurrah! I really am looking forward to reading This Is Chick Lit and though there is a part of me that wishes I had contributed as I hand in my last manuscript 2 ½ months late (ack!) I can’t help but think that I probably made the right decision. You have gathered together quite an impressive group of authors and I’m sure that each of them has taken the time to craft a story that is truly spectacular. I just hope that the haters out there get the point.kyradavishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11564245025938264405noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10992888.post-1155572556019309652006-08-14T09:22:00.000-07:002006-08-14T09:22:00.000-07:00I'm glad you get it now. :)I'm glad you get it now. :)Lauren Baratz-Logstedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09697004599212202264noreply@blogger.com
