The Choice I Never Made

I just saw The Devil Wears Prada. I admit I haven’t read the book yet although I need to this weekend. I’m supposed to write an article comparing it to the movie. How else am I going to write my popcorn off as a business expense?

Anyway, I’ve read certain newspaper reviews that stated that the movie was about the enticing, but dangerous nature of the fashion industry. The San Francisco Chronicle suggested that by the end of the film you will begin to understand the bizarre logic that Miranda Priestly (and all of her followers) use as a justification for treating each other horribly and that the audience will have to make the same decision as the film’s protagonist…should we sell our souls to the Prada wearing devil? Should we condone her behavior and say that all’s fair in business and fashion?

Thing is, I don’t think that’s what the movie’s about at all. I think that the underlining premise, conflict and moral of the whole film is that you can’t have it both ways. The protagonist can’t have the beatnik friends and laid back social life and still score invitations to black tie Manhattan parties and get air kisses from the top fashion designers.

But I don’t agree with that. My entire life I’ve been on the fence socially. In high school I wasn’t’ a cheerleader or a drama geek or an athlete or a surfer and yet despite the fact that these groups were always careful not to intermingle I was always welcomed into all of them. I never felt like I had to pick a social click and the people in the clicks never tried to force me to do so. They accepted me as an individual and welcomed my friendship and I think the reason they did this was because I was comfortable with my individuality. I wasn’t trying to prove anything and I think a lot of people found my self-confidence to be appealing.

Now I’m an adult and four weeks ago I was living it up at my own celebrity attended launch party in the Hamptons. I wore the designer dress that was given to me, I exchange air kisses with a few of Manhattan’s “it” girls (and guys, for that matter). Today I chatted on the phone with an up and coming television actress and it was only a few months ago that I was at the W flirting with a bigtime-behind-the-scenes-Hollywood-guy who had driven up from his Beverly Hills home just for the opportunity to take me out.

And when that date was over I got into my 1992 Volvo (which is always littered with my son’s crayons and comic books), drove back to my comfortably but poorly decorated home and slipped into the nightgown that I bought at Ross seven years ago. I don’t see myself as glamorous. I just see myself as someone who can BE glamorous when the situation calls for it. When I book a flight I usually do it on Southwest and I don’t get irritated with the airline’s complete lack of luxury. It’s cheap and the flight attendants are friendly and that’s good enough for me. I’ll be chic when I go to the high profile parties. No one’s ever told me I can’t have it both ways. Somehow I’ve managed to care about the environment AND the latest fashions without having an identity crisis.

Perhaps it was different for Lauren Weisberger. Maybe when she worked for her “Miranda Priestly” she really did find herself in a position where she had to choose. But oddly enough the success of The Devil Wears Prada has actually made her into an “it” girl. People see her as glamorous and associate her with fabulous parties and she has been photographed while walking the red carpet more than once. But I bet at the end of the day she slips into her own Ross nightgown…or something like that.

Thank You

So today I was working on the third Sophie book,Obsession, Deceit and Really Dark Chocolate. I was in the middle of editing a scene, checking to make sure that the banter was funny and cutting without being overly abrasive and that the sexual tension between Sophie and you-know-who was intense enough to make my readers crave some dark chocolate espresso beans of their own when it hit me; this is what I do for a living. I sit down and create crazy characters who are constantly getting themselves into trouble and having a great time doing so and people PAY ME FOR THAT!

It still amazes me that this is my life. I can’t believe that I have a name that is internationally recognized, that people in the publishing world want to work with me and that other authors actually ask me for advice! Everyday I get more emails from readers who want to thank me for bringing them Sophie. They’re actually thanking me for doing something that I LOVE!

It’s hard to believe that I could be so lucky.

Anyway, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for all of your support. I know I’ve said this before but it bears repeating:

You have made my dreams come true and for that I will always be grateful.

Seks, Moord En Een Vanilla Latte!

Sophie is such the jetsetter. I’m fairly sure she’s the only American left whom the Europeans still like. No Canadian flag on her backpack!

Meike, my fabulous Dutch editor sent me this cover…That’s right! Sophie’s in Holland! Furthermore the Dutch apparently know that there’s more to just a latte then milk!

See the Italians (and apparently the French) don’t drink lattes. They don’t drink café mochas and (I hope you’re sitting down for this) they don’t drink Frappuccinos!! They stick to espressos and cappuccinos, period, end of story. Granted their espresso is damn good but it’s a totally different experience from drinking one of those caffeinated drinks that’s just a little bigger than your head. Not only is the espresso shot simpler in terms of ingredients but it’s a LOT smaller. Of course the Italians like things smaller than the average American (like their waistlines). When I was in Italy this last October one of the locals remarked on the needlessly large servings we Americans indulge in. “Like those huge bottles of soda they sell from the machines!” she exclaimed. “Who needs that big of a drink?”

My traveling companion, a 5’11’ athletic blonde woman who drinks more bottled water and diet soda than a tri-athlete with a Pepsi sponsorship, looked at the Italian woman with an expression of shock and replied, “People who are thirsty, that’s who! Your entire country is dehydrated!”

I’m not sure that’s really true but the point is that lattes, as we know them, don’t exist in Italy so my Italian publisher had to change my book title from Sex, Murder And A Double Latte to Sex, Murder And A Cappuccino…or according to Google’s translation, Sex, Homicides And A Cappuccino.

But not the Dutch! These are people who will never need ice chips or IVs. They know how big a drink is supposed to be and not only do they know what a café latte is, they actually know what a VANILLA café latte is!!! They’re a hop skip and a jump away from embracing the Venti-suger-free-vanilla-no-foam-extra-hot-non-fat-latte! Well maybe not; but I’m still excited that they used the word latte in the title (and a really cool font to boot). And I’m even more excited that Sophie got to Holland in the first place.

Thank you Meike for keeping me informed and thank you Holland for welcoming my alter-ego into your country.

Sexe, Meurtres et Cappuccino

Okay, I have some serious deadlines hanging over my head but I have to share this. Guess who’s going to France!

If you guessed me you’re wrong, but close. You see, as of July 1st the French will be introduced to Sophie Katz!!!

I just love it when my books get translated. It makes me feel so worldly. But also it’s just an incredible honor. Here I am typing up my imaginings in my bedroom and halfway across the world there are people who I have never met, who I probably never WILL meet reading my work. How can I not be flattered and humbled by that?

And then in this country things are going pretty darned well too! There were over 50 people at my Capitola Book Café event and it was such a wonderful and diverse audience. Men and women, some in their 20s others in their 70s and 80s--it was just a fantastic mix. I knew about ten of the people in the crowd (friends and family) and about 30% of the audience had read Sex, Murder And A Double Latte but the rest were there to meet me and Sophie for the first time. They were very responsive and lively group and I had a wonderful time.

Halfway through my reading I my eyes fell on a woman sitting in one of the middle rows. Her eyes were closed and her chin was slowly inching closer to her chest. She was petite, probably in her 70s and had a head full of brown curly hair. I didn’t hold her fatigue against her. After all, which one of us hasn't fallen asleep at an inopportune time. Yet just as I was about to wrap the whole thing up and start signing books she raised her hand. “I have a question,” she said in a clear and surprisingly alert tone.

“Yes?” I asked. I had to admire her courage, if I had inadvertently fallen asleep during a speaker’s presentation I wouldn’t have the nerve to ask anything.

“With all your writing, traveling and parenting do you make time for love affairs?”

I am famous for my ability to volley back any off the wall question that is thrown at me during Q&As but this woman, who apparently hadn’t been sleeping AT ALL, had totally thrown me for a loop. I actually stumbled for an answer, finally agreeing that I should make time for such things, if only in the name of research.

Anyway, I don’t know who the woman was but I like her. Anyone who can get the better of me deserves my respect.

This Girl Knows How To Move!

Do you know anyone who likes moving? Probably not, although personally I don’t have a big problem with it. The reason I approach this task with hope rather than dread is that each time I move I’m sure this will be the home in which I become an organized person. My place will be neat and tidy, I will have dinner parties on a whim and I will not stress out when guests pop by unexpectedly because my home will be in perfect order.

That’s never happened for me. Maybe it’s because I don’t know HOW to move or HOW to be organized. There really is a right and a wrong way, it’s just that I’ve never learned it. Of course I could go out and buy one of those non-fiction how-to books. Those are always really fun to read, kind of like the instruction manual for my camcorder (which I’ve had for seven years and still refuse to crack open).

But now I think I’ve found my answer. Sara Rosett’s book, Moving Is Murder. Yes, it’s a mystery. Yes, it’s chick-litish in a Mom-litish kind of way. And yes, it’s a fun read, but here’s what makes it really special. Every chapter contains a useful tip on how to move efficiently! I first became aware of this book when reading a Kirkus review (this is another book Kirkus liked…two in one year, it’s a miracle!). Anyway, Kirkus said this of Rosett's novel:

A cozy debut that'll help you get organized and provide entertainment in your newfound spare time.

That pretty much sums it up. It’s a how-to-book inside a thoroughly entertaining novel. I’m sure some of you are familiar with the Goldy Bear Culinary Mysteries by Diane Mott Davidson; you know the mysteries that also contain recipes for cookies and chocolate tortes and the like. Well this is in the same vein except it won’t make you fat.

Furthermore Sara Rosett truly is an expert mover. As a wife of an Air Force pilot she has moved 10 TIMES! I mean damn!!! She actually wrote a piece for Chicken Soup for the Military Wife’s Soul and while I haven’t read it a military-wife-friend of mine told me she found the essay to be both comforting and inspiring.

Anyway, if you want to learn how to be good at what many of us disorganized people would consider to be a very tedious task while reading a book that is anything but tedious Moving Is Murder is the way to go. And if you have time to check out her blog you’ll see that she provides her readers with lots of useful links (particularly for aspiring and published authors).

So that's what I've been reading. I have lots more to tell you about my life but it’ll have to wait to the weekend. Bear with me?

Killer Kyra’s Red Hot (If You Believe the Media)

Well the media for my book is beginning to really take off. The Santa Cruz Good Times gave me a two page spread in their A&E section. The title of the article? “Killer Kyra.” Got to love that.

And of course you HAVE to love the two page adaptation of my book that Cosmo is running in their July issue! I’m a “Red Hot Read” people!

If you’re planning on being in the Santa Cruz area on Thursday the 22nd or if you’ve been looking for an excuse to go to Santa Cruz then you should pencil in my 7:30 Capitola Book Café reading. The Capitola Book Café is a wonderful bookstore and they’ve hosted many of the “greats” including David Sedaris, Jane Fonda and Rita Mae Brown. I’m honored to be invited to speak there (plus they make great lattes which they give me for free on the day of my events.

Other than that I thought I’d share the photos of my tour that I’ve only recently receive. You can also find more photos at this site. Hope you enjoy them!

Deborah LeBlanc Freaked Me Out Last Night

I needed something to read on my road trip so I grabbed fellow GCC member, Deborah LeBlanc’s book, House Divided. Admittedly I didn’t know much about Deborah beforehand. For instance I didn’t know that she was a trained treateur (Cajun Healer) a licensed death scene investigator and an active member of two national paranormal investigation teams. I just figured that this was as good a time as any to get acquainted with her writing.

My mistake was that I started reading it right before bed while staying in a little funky hotel room in the middle of nowhere while my son was fast asleep. Actually I shouldn’t say I read it “right before bed” because I ended up staying awake long after I had intended to just so I could finish “one more chapter.” Of course with every chapter I just got more freaked but Deborah’s writing is so compelling that I found myself unable to put her book down. Her characterizations were right on the money and the emotions involved were raw and real and as for the spooky aspect…well let's just say that if you do end up reading it you should do so with the lights on.

So if you want a good scary read pick up her book and be sure to check out her blog as well. Then if you have trouble going to sleep afterwards go ahead and read one of the Jack scenes from my books. I’m not sure if that’ll calm you down but at least you won’t make the mistake of going to bed without taking your birth control pill.

San Diego In A Nutshell

Okay, before I tell you about my latest adventures here’s a quick FYI: Passion, Betrayal And Killer Highlights is featured in the current For Me magazine and Ebony magazine. I’m obviously very excited about this and I highly encourage you to check out the reviews next time you’re at a newsstand/bookstore.

Okay, moving on. My trip to San Diego didn’t exactly have an auspicious beginning. As I mentioned before I was fighting off a cold when I left Denver. Well it hit me on Thursday (the day I left for San Diego) BIG TIME. We’re talking fever, chills, nausea, sinus headaches the works. Here I had a television appearance first thing on Friday morning at KUSI and on Thursday night I was in a hotel room trying to get my son ready for bed while I threw up. It was fun times for everybody. Then later that night (or early the next morning if you want to be technical about it) it became clear to me that my son had caught my illness. He coughed through the night while I did my best to keep my head out of the toilet. But miraculously I managed to pull it together for the interview. I took some heavy duty medication, put on some heavy duty make-up and headed down to the studio and as unbelievable as this is the interview actually went well! The anchors who interviewed me, Sandra Maas and Andrea Naverson were incredibly nice as were the producers of the show who went out of their way to talk to me and make me feel at home. In other words, I didn’t throw-up on air. Yea me.

My son was equally determined to grin and bear it. Yes, he was sick as a dog but he had come to San Diego to go to the zoo and Sea World and nothing short of emergency open heart surgery was going to keep him from doing just that. So I did my motherly duty and took him to both. We didn’t stay at the zoo as long as we would have if we had been in good health but he still got to see the Red Panda, the binturong, the wombat and the naked mole rat which was what was most important to him. The next day we went to Sea World which was fun but again, his health mandated that we keep the visit short.

As Murphy’s Law would have it, both my son and I were almost fully recovered on Sunday which was supposed to be our last day in San Diego. I went to The Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore signing and while the audience in attendance was smaller than that of many of my other events, there were a few things that made it more than a little noteworthy. First of all, there were the owners who were so friendly and kind it was impossible not to feel welcome. In addition to that blog reader Pricilla was in attendance! I was so excited to finally be able to meet her! She’s every bit as kind and genuine as her posted comments suggest and believe it or not she’s even more gorgeous than her killer picture (sorry guys, she’s married). Anyhoo, I had a great time chatting with her and she made the event truly special.

Okay, so now that all my official Southern Cal tour stops were complete I was supposed to drive back up to Northern California with my son. But here’s the thing…when you go to Sea World you can buy a one-day pass for $54 or you can buy a two-day pass for $53. So obviously I bought the two-day pass even though I doubted I was going to use it. But now my son was feeling better so I figured, what the hell? I extended my stay for one more day in San Diego and the next morning I took him back to Sea World and even got him a “behind the scenes tour.” He LOVED it. On the tour he got to get up close and personal with some rescued elephant seal pups, sea turtles, a mother dolphin and her baby and he even got to pet a shark! The child was in second heaven. Then we got to see all the attractions at the park that he missed the first time around. It was just wonderful.

Afterwards I drove us up to Carlsbad and checked us into a child friendly, affordable Inn with a pool. By the way, do you know what’s in Carlsbad? Legoland. I know, I know, but I’ve always wanted to do this! Just drive up the coast and stop at all the silly touristy attractions that interested me in any way. When I originally dreamed that idea up I didn’t have a child so Legoland wasn’t on my imaginary agenda but I’m cool with Legos so why not? I haven’t told my son what I’m planning yet (better to surprise him then have it not work out and disappoint him) but I do think it’s going to happen. I also booked a hotel for tomorrow in Oxnard for no reason other than that it is more than two hours and less than three hours North of where I am now. I figured that on our way back up to N. Cal on Wednesday we could stop at Solvang, otherwise known as Danish Town. There are lots of cute shops and right outside town there’s an Ostrich farm where for three dollars you can feed the cute (albeit doomed) fowl.

California is such a fun state. If you ever have the chance you should just drive up its coast and see what you find. I guarantee you it’ll be interesting!

Birthdays, Denver and Old College Buddies

Well the birthday was a success. I even managed to put a cake together at the last minute! Yea me! Of course after pleading with me to make him a “homemade cake” my son barely touched it but everybody else seemed to enjoy it so I guess there’s some satisfaction in that. I actually ended up throwing my son a surprise B-Day party at the last minute. You see I thought I was going to have to be in San Diego today for the beginning of my Southern California book tour but it turns out I don’t have to be there until tomorrow (for those of you in that area tune into KUSI’s late morning show around eleven to catch my interview and please come say hi during my Sunday book signing at Mysterious Galaxy at 2:00). So I called a few of my son’s friends and asked them to stop by for cake and the like and I had my mother take my boy to the park at a strategic time. When he came back he was greeted with balloons, confetti and small children jumping out from behind couches. It was really very cute and he was greatly appreciative.

Now a quick word on what happened in Denver. It didn’t start out so great. I got off the plane at my scheduled time but my luggage (along with the luggage of one other passenger) did not. America West swore that I would definitely have it by that night. Larry King once said he suspected that anyone who interviewed for a job with an airline had to take a lie detector test first and if they failed they’d be hired. I’m beginning to see his point. Anyway things immediately improved when an old college girlfriend who had moved to Denver came to pick me up. I haven’t seen Beth since we graduated and it was wonderful to be able to catch up with her and meet her husband and children. It’s funny because we come from such different backgrounds (I was raised within a Californian, liberal, Jewish, matriarchal family and she was raised in a Southern, conservative, military, patriarchal family) but we relate to one another so well. After talking to her for two minutes it felt as if no time had passed at all. Anyway she brought me back to her home and prepared a wonderful home cooked meal in my honor and then I finally got back to my hotel where my luggage had NOT been delivered. Furthermore every time I tried to call the baggage department at America West I got a busy signal. Finally I called the corporate headquarters and had THEM put me through at which point I was told that my luggage would most likely (no longer definitely) be at my hotel before my 10:30 am television appearance.

No such luck. Hopefully the people who saw me on TV thought my “messy up-do” was contrived rather than the result of being forced to put myself together without the help of a proper hairbrush.

Anyway the interview on KUSA-TV’s (Denver’s NBC affiliate) morning show, Colorado & Co. went very well. The hosts, Denise Plate and Mark McIntosh, were a lot of fun and knew how to interview (you’d be amazed at how many “professionals” don’t have that skill). So it put me in a good mood. I then spent the day toddling around Denver before going to my first book signing at Denver’s Murder By The Book. There was a great turnout and they actually had a cake made that looks exactly like my book! How cool is that??? I'll post the picture soon.

Then it was off to Boulder for my signing at High Crimes. Again there was a great turn out and Beth came to this one so we went out for drinks/dinner afterwards. Boulder is a great little city. I strongly encourage all of you to go there if ever given a chance. It’s impossible not to be charmed by it.

Then it was back to my hotel where I was greeted by MY LUGGAGE! Just in time for me to put it on the plane that was flying me back to California. I also came to the realization that my throat was soar and I was a bit congested. Yes, I was bringing back a cold as a souvenir. Ah well, these are the challenges of life.

And The Parties Continued

The Red Dress Ink party on May 30th was definitely the place to be.

You see Red Dress Ink partnered up with New York Moves in order to sponsor a contest in which people across the country could submit their designs for the perfect red dress. The five finalist’s dresses were modeled throughout the evening by the women of America’s Top Model. It felt more like a club scene than a publisher’s party. People were dancing on the tables and hooking up left and right. Normally I’d be trampling the furniture with the best of them but the authors who contributed to the Girls Night Out anthology were all in the VIP section signing their books and I so rarely get to hang out with them (Lynda Curnyn, Laura Caldwell, Sarah Mlynowski and so on) thus I spent most of my time in the VIP section as well.

The party started at 7 but I got there at 7:45 and skipped out a little after 10. After all, I had a plane to Denver to catch early the next morning so I could make a television appearance the following day…my luggage on the other hand was destine to enjoy an all expense paid vacation to Vegas, courtesy of America West. But more about that later. It’s 1 in the morning which means that it is now officially my son’s birthday and I just screwed up his cake. So sometime in the next fifteen hours I will either give my seriously flawed Martha Stewart impersonation another shot or I will rush out to the nearest bakery and buy a cake that I can decorate in an fashion that is amateurish enough to enable me to pass it off as homemade.

I seriously leaning toward option number two….

Take That Naysayers!

Yes, yes I know, I need to tell you about the rest of my East Coast/Colorado tour but for right now indulge me for some late night musings.

Ever since I started writing I’ve been hearing the same warning repeated over and over again. Chick lit is on the way out. It’s nothing but a fad, its star is sinking, yada yada yada.

Whatever, tell it to Kate White and Jennifer Weiner. Of course White and (as of her last book) Weiner don’t just write chick lit books they, like me, have combined two genres in order to create a chick lit hybrid and as I’ve said before, that may very well be the key to chick lit’s survival.

But chick lit murder mysteries are no longer a major novelty (which is not to say you shouldn’t buy the Sophie books because, of course, they’re special). Nonetheless the newest thing is Chick Lit fantasy. Sarah Mlynowski helped define this genre with Bras and Broomsticks and MaryJanice Davidson is making a killing (no pun intended, really) with her books that bear titles like Undead and Unreturnable and Undead and Unwed.

The newest gal on that particular block is Shanna Swendson author of Once Upon Stilettos and Enchanted Inc. I’ve heard through the publishing grapevine that her sales are taking off big time. She is being credited for creating books that expertly combine the best aspects of both Harry Potter and Bridget Jones. When I heard this I immediately knew Swendson was a kindred spirit. After all, author Jorie Green Mark was quoted as saying that “If Bridgett Jones and Sherlock Holmes ever had an American love child she might be a little bit like the clever Sophie Katz.” So to my way of thinking that means that if my protagonist met Swendson’s protagonist they would surely be solving murders and goggling sexy single wizards over some well deserved Cosmos. Plus judging from Swendson’s blog I would say that she’s an author that I would like to hang out with given the chance.

But mostly I’m just thrilled that yet another writer is out there pushing the chick lit envelope. It seems that chick lit is a little like rock & roll. It doesn’t die…it evolves.

I’m Baaack!

Yes, it’s been quite a whirlwind. Mine was an adventure filled with parties, book signings, TV appearances, near misses, heartfelt reunions and lost luggage. But let’s start with the Hamptons:

First, before I get to the party let me tell you about the “near miss.” One of my publicists was driving me around Southhampton showing me the sights when she went through an intersection without checking to see if there was anyone in the crosswalk, which of course there was. We missed this guy by maybe a few feet. Horrified, I looked through the passenger side window in the direction of our near-victim and was about to mouth the words “I’m so sorry!” when I froze. I knew this man. Everybody knows this man.

Yes, that’s right, my publicist nearly killed Rudolph Gulliani. He was a very good sport about the whole thing….I mean, as we all know, this wasn’t the first time his life was almost cut short but still, I felt bad about being in the car that almost brought about the demise of New York’s hero. I guess I could have taken the opportunity to invite him to my party but somehow that felt tacky.

Okay, so now about the aforementioned party. It was wonderful!

I arrived at The Star Room with my wonderful editor, Margaret Marbury and I was wearing a lovely Shoshanna dress. Admittedly it was one of those things that I would never have chosen if I had seen it on the hanger but the thing about Shoshanna is that her clothing is all about fit and I’ll be damned if that woman doesn’t know how to flatter a girl’s figure.

I felt like a cross between a socialite and a porcelain doll which is pretty amazing because I’m neither of those things. Granted, I’m not that dark, but porcelain? I don’t think so.

Shu Uemura’s top make-up artist, Timoria McQueen, was there applying fake eyelashes (did you know they apply them individually now with a tweezers?!) and for me she took the time to do my make-up. I couldn’t have felt more beautiful and the experience was made all the better by the fact that I really liked this gal! She was kind and genuine and just a blast to hang-out with.

Fabulous blogger and “it” girl (seen here in her stunning red dress), Tia Walker also attended. I can’t say enough about this woman. She’s smart, funny and has an energy about her that’s impossible not to get caught up in. She’s one of those people who you know will be able to get what they want out of life and furthermore will be deserving of their good fortune. I highly encourage you to check out her site (there’s more info/pictures from the party on there too!)

Up and coming singer, Samantha Cole also attended my party. The Daily News took my picture with her although I haven’t seen it yet. I’m a little intimidated by the idea of being photographed with Playboy’s Miss November.

Of course there’s a lot more to tell but I have some serious “catching-up” to do with my son so just hold on tight and I’ll slowly catch you up over the next few days! Oh and if you emailed me lately, give me one more week (sorry!).

ABOUT KYRA DAVIS

I'm the internationally published author of the Sophie Katz mystery series, and So Much For My Happy Ending. My first Erotic Fiction Trilogy will be released in January 2013.

Aside from that, I'm a single mom; I'm addicted to coffee and True Blood (the show, not the drink). I'm happy with who I am yet I’m always striving to be better; I have more bad hair days than good ones, I love a challenge but I am not fearless, I’m….well…just me.
